Finding a Truck or Trailer with Asset Locator

Search by license plate, DOT/MC, and more to locate a specific truck or trailer.

Written by John LaDeur

Asset Locator lets you search GenLogs' sensor network to find images and sighting details for a specific truck or trailer. Head to assetlocator.genlogs.io to get started.

Searching for an Asset

You can search using any combination of the fields below. A search matches on every field you fill in, so it's best to start broad and narrow down rather than filling in everything at once.

Cab Identifiers

  • USDOT

  • MC Number

  • Truck License Plate

  • Cab Number

  • Power Unit VIN

Equipment Identifiers

  • Equipment Logo

  • Trailer Number

  • Chassis Number

  • Container Number

  • Equipment Type

  • Hazmat

Other filters

  • Deep Search: matches any text our sensors extracted, even if it doesn't fit a standard field, like unique markings or writing on a trailer

  • Image ID or Record ID

  • Sensor ID

  • City / State

  • Start Date: defaults to a 3-month lookback. Expand this if you're looking for older sightings

Understanding Your Results

Each result includes images captured by GenLogs' trident sensors (front, side, and rear views, when available), a timestamp, and location details down to the road and lat/long. Switch between list and card view, or click into a result for full asset details.

Each sensor has three cameras with different jobs: one captures the front plate, one captures the side of the cab, and one captures the rear of the trailer. Trailer license plates aren't captured, since that would need a fourth, differently angled camera. If a result looks incomplete, use Show Nearby Traffic to check whether another camera pass caught the missing angle.

Refining and Sharing Results

After you run a search, use the quick filters on the left to narrow your results without starting over. Every result also has a record ID and image ID you can share with a teammate, plus options to export results or download images and a PDF report.

Filtering by MC Number, License Plate, Cab Number, and Equipment Type

These quick filters are especially useful for narrowing a large result set down to exactly the asset or fleet you're checking on:

  • MC Number: narrow to a specific carrier when a broader search (like a lane or DOT) returns multiple related MCs

  • License Plate: pinpoint one specific truck out of a carrier's full fleet

  • Cab Number: same idea, useful when you have a cab number from a BOL or customer report but not a plate

  • Equipment Type: narrow to just the trailers matching what you're trying to verify, like flatbed, dry van, or reefer

Example: A carrier tells you they have a dedicated reefer available for your lane. Before booking, search their MC number in Asset Locator and filter by Equipment Type: Reefer. If their recent sightings only show flatbed or dry van, that's worth asking about before the load is tendered. The same approach works if a customer reports an issue with one specific truck: filtering by that truck's license plate or cab number narrows results to that one asset's actual history, instead of scrolling through the carrier's entire fleet.
