Shipper Inbound/Outbound Use Cases

Written by John LaDeur

In the Freight Intelligence tool, users are able to identify inbound/outbound lanes from specific shipper locations.

In the shippers' section of FI, input an origin or specific shipper. If a shipper operates multiple locations, searching their name will surface all of them, so you can drill into the specific facility you're researching.

Shipper search screen in Freight Intelligence showing a list of matching shipper locations.

From the list that populates below, click on a specific shipper. Freight Intelligence will generate the inbound/outbound volume as collected by GenLogs' sensor network. In the customer tab, you can choose IB, OB, or both.

Blue indicates inbound, red indicates outbound, and purple indicates both. The volume is indicated by the thickness of the line compared to other lanes. Zoom in on a specific lane for a more precise volume breakdown, shown as a percentage of that shipper's total inbound or outbound freight.

Searching by Lane

You can also search by lane instead of a specific shipper name or solely by origin. Enter both an origin and destination, with an adjustable radius, to find every shipper moving freight along that corridor. Results are ranked by volume, so the shippers commanding the most freight on that lane rise to the top.

Lane search from Chicago, Illinois to Dallas, Texas with a 50 mile radius, showing 2,944 shippers found and ranked by volume, with Amazon #Hch2 as the top result.

Use Cases

  • Finding who to call on a lane: Search a lane directly instead of a known shipper name to see who's moving the most freight along that corridor. Useful for prospecting a new market or lane without already knowing which companies to target.

  • Expanding existing accounts: Sellers often know only part of a customer's freight footprint. Running an existing account through Shipper Intelligence frequently surfaces lanes the account team didn't know the shipper was running, revealing power lanes to ask about and grow wallet share on.

  • Backhaul discovery: If a carrier is running a long lane one direction, look up shippers near their destination to find return freight and avoid moving empty or partially loaded.

  • Network balance: Use inbound/outbound volume to spot imbalanced lanes and plan capacity accordingly.

  • Cold calls with prospects: Reference a prospective shipper's actual lanes before the call, backed by observed data rather than a guess.

This data comes from pairing public records (like known manufacturing plants and distribution centers) with GenLogs' own sensor observations of truck movement between those locations. Shipper Intelligence currently covers over 375,000 shippers.
